SectionMaker provides a CAD like interface that can be used to draw various objects (e.g. lines, polylines etc) using the mouse pointer. The main application window provides an area where all drawing objects must be placed as shown in the figure below.

At the top of the main window various toolbars are placed giving easy access to the most commonly used commands. At the bottom of the main window the status bar is placed where useful information are presented like the current coordinates or the current working layer.
SectionMaker uses 3 layers to place the drawing objects in order to minimize any confusion when trying to select and/or edit these objects. The active layer must be set accordingly prior to selecting any object. These layers are:
| • | Section layer: In this layer, CPT geotechnical sections are placed |
| • | Lines layer: Line objects are placed in this layer |
| • | Text layer: All other objects are placed in this layer |
