Defining soil layers

Top  Previous  Next

Although SPAS 2009 can estimate soil unit weight from Vs values based on the equation from ........ some times unit weight is determined by other means e.g. laboratory tests. The software provides a feature where soil layers are imported from the user thus allowing a custom value for unit weight to be used in the calculation of Gmax instead of the automated values.

Click on the Soil layers button on the toolbar and the dialog shown in figure 40 will pop up.

To add a soil layer in the list, fill all the information needed inside Layer properties area and click on the Add layer button. SPAS 2009 identifies soil layers that have a user assigned value for unit weight by the Auto property. If Auto is false then the custom value will be used for the determination of Gmax for all calculation points laying inside this layer. If you need to modify the properties of a layer, select it from the list, modify the properties values and click on the Update layer button. To delete a layer from the list, simply select it and click on the Delete layer button.

Note

The very first layer entered is assigned with an elevation value equal to zero (free surface). The second layer will have an elevation value equal to the first layer's elevation plus its thickness and so on.
